YO-RAN – Yorkshire Open Radio Access Networks

Other Projects

YO-RAN is a three year project that will complete in December 2025. It has been focused on developing Open RAN components and RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) software to enable neutral host networks. Its innovations support infrastructure sharing across multiple operators, as well as private and enterprise-based networks. The project has designed low-cost, generic radio units with configurable, multiband capabilities and developed efficient fronthaul solutions to connect them with distributed units. A key achievement is ensuring all components are configurable via a RIC that dynamically responds to the needs of diverse network users. Partners are mainly located in Yorkshire, with the project led by University of York. Other partners include University of Sheffield, Adtran, Radio Design, Slipstream Engineering Design, AQL, BT and Safenetics. The first phase also involved JET Engineering.

Currently, the project is moving its solutions closer to commercialisation. This includes refining its testbed for manufacturing and transport applications, and also extending a testbed for cell-free technology. Radio Unit development is also being advanced towards commercialisation. These project’s advancements will strengthen the UK’s position in Open RAN innovation, supporting more flexible, cost-effective, and scalable network deployments.

YO-RAN has been fundamental in establishing the Lab of the North, as a way of providing long term sustainability for the ecosystem, with several of its founding partners also members of YO-RAN.
